Healthcare Attorney Spotlight: Ralph Levy

Ralph Levy is Of Counsel in the Health Care practice at Dickinson Wright, assisting and advising entrepreneurs and owners of closely-held businesses in operationalizing their business plans, including the estate planning, business succession and tax planning issues thereof. He has over 40 years of experience in counseling clients in the Health Care arena both in private practice and within heath care organizations, having served as General Counsel for a national health care services provider and manufacturer of medical equipment. He leverages this valuable knowledge by assisting clients in establishing, operating, expanding and selling their businesses.

What is your niche/sub-practice group specialty; and why did you choose it?

Early on in my legal career, I provided legal services to a startup provider of dialysis services.  This ongoing representation eventually led to my becoming the first General Counsel at a national dialysis provider and serving in that capacity for almost ten years.  As a result, I developed a subspecialty of assisting clients on transactions in the dialysis services areas.

What is a recent case or law that is impacting the industry, and why?

President Trump recently signed an Executive Order that promoted home dialysis as a modality of choice for dialysis patients.  This could have a significant impact on the dialysis services business.

What is one piece of advice you’d like to give to your clients?

I tell my clients to remember my three rules:  trust no one, read everything and assume nothing.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received related to the health care industry?

Even though hospitals and providers of ancillary health care services have huge investments in bricks and mortar and equipment for treating patients, the treating physicians still have a significant influence and impact on the quality of care being provided to patients.
